The Mountain Goats do a lot of sad music with regard to lyrics, despite oddly upbeat or energetic music. A large chunk of it is about failing relationships or foreveralone type stuff.

The Mountain Goats - No Children

If that's familiar to you, you are either a fan or you heard it on Morel Orel, and you are awesome for watching that show.

Love Love Love - The Mountain Goats

This one will always make me lol because it was in a Rhapsody commercial where a girl was saying it reminded her of her deep love for her boyfriend and how it compels her to be with and stand by him, when the song is about how doing things out of love is stupid.

Overall though he sad a lot, but I still love his music. His voice might take some getting used to though.

Love the style of music, even tho the vocals aren't really my thing.  Good stuff.

Once you understand the lyrics the story told is incredibly sad and yet the song is written in a more neutral tone.
Queen - '39 - A Night At The Opera (1975)

And then sometimes it does sound sad.
Sun Kil moon, Heron Blue

Anyone who has heard me talk music lately knows I've been on a big kick of this band. Listening to this song right now, it's very appropriate for the thread:

Lost My Mind - As Tall As Lions

Close to home
Far from me
I thought I lost my goddamn mind trying to be all that you want me to be
And now you're gone, gone, gone
You won't look at me

Kodachrome is how I see
All the world's in black and white, red, blue, and green
The moment's locked up in our machine
And now they're gone, gone, gone
Oh, they're gone, gone, gone, gone, gone
From my memory

Wake up in his
We rose a toast to the rest
But nobody cares
If I let it in
Who knows what's staying under my skin

I can't believe that anybody hasn't put any piano transpositions of Final Fantasy music...  Cry

Everyone listen to this, it looks like a conventional piano cover, but it is so insanely beautiful... One of the only songs that could just about bring me to tears. Because I'm a man... A MANLY MAN!

Kingdom Hearts II - Utada Hikaru - PASSION (piano cover)

SO beautiful. Trust me.

Robert Johnson is good for that feel.

So is Elmore James.
