which is really quite silly. Just because something isn't mainstream, doesn't necessarily make it underground or anything. I'll start:
an indie rock band from Austin, TX with funky bass lines and 60's psychedelic rock influence; Spoon.

I saw these guys a few months back when Nevermore was in town. They're a Canadian Folk Metal band, that resembles Children of Bodom. Except they're interesting. I actually was speaking to the vocalist before I even knew he was on stage. Pretty cool guy.
Not saying that they aren't well known, but most of the metal fans I talk to have never even heard of them. Also, another band that I saw at that concert, Our Daily Trespasses, is a progressive death metal band. Their music isn't all that heavy on lyrics, or singing/growling. I can't find any of their music on youtube, because they're pretty small still. So I'll just post their myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/ourdailytrespasses1

Amesoeurs, a French post-punk band with a bit of black metal thrown in.

I edited my post to add an Agalloch song, but I couldn't pick one before I had to leave. I'll look into the other two.

"Tin Pan Blues Band: a 1920's style swing, jump, and blues band that sounds like Ray Charles and Tom Waits at New Orleans Bourbon Street parade." A band from NYC, I saw them when they were touring here in Greensboro and I friggin' loved them.
--- Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands...I explain them to my friends as "weird, evil, carnival music from outer space mixed with spanish vibes". It's a terrible explanation, but there is no way to really explain them except that they're awesome.

When i was touring the US and was in NY i saw this band perform. I was actually in central park together with KY and we both enjoyed the music very much. A band i think nobody or almost nobody knows about but which i believe makes really good music: Yeasayer.
Their music is also pretty experimental at times resulting in fascinating songs like this:
